A community clean-up is doing more than picking up litter.

Volunteers for the DIY Community Health spring clean-up will learn about safe needle disposal from the Porcupine Health Unit's harm reduction outreach team. After the work's done, there's a free community meal outside of the organization's facility.

The event is on Saturday, May 4. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the activity runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are meeting at DIY Community Health, 114 Algonquin Blvd. west parking lot. It's at the Birch Street intersection.

People interested in volunteers are asked to bring safety gloves and a reusable water bottle. You should also wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather conditions. Garbage bags and a limited supply of safety gloves will be available.

A number of community partners and businesses have stepped up to make the event possible.
